We want to recognize the people who help make Family Promise of Greater Johnson City the place it is, whether they are staff, volunteers, donors, frequent shoppers, or board members. Without them, the organization would not function the same.

Emilee Upright is a frequent volunteer in the Family Promise Thrift Store. Emilee started shopping in the thrift store two years ago and came in almost daily. She was first looking for vintage and used goods, knowing she could always find something unique. However, after shopping in the store and seeing what Family Promise does, her inspiration came from her sense of purpose: the idea that she was serving the unhoused community somehow.

“This is a place for people to come to get things they need at an affordable price, and it is a place that supports the shelter and the families in the program,” Emilee said. “I’ve seen people with various needs helped here; people who need clothes or food are always helped.”

Emilee began volunteering in the store this past April when we were understaffed. She came in and quickly diminished our mountain of donations by carefully sorting them and giving them a home in the store. She always has a smile on her face and often talks about how nice each donor and shopper is. Emilee brightens the store by organizing and engaging with the shoppers and employees with her lively conversation and laughter.

“It’s perfect for the community- when anyone needs help or a listening ear, they can come here,” Emilee marveled. “It’s inspiring to see these people helped; I love Family Promise.”
