A Fresh Start

This month, two families in our shelter program moved into their own spaces.

Nothing is better than a beautiful day when assisting a family in a move. Today offered the sun and the heat as we lifted and shuffled furniture. A mother and her thirteen-year-old daughter were able to find a location that gave them each a room of their own. We unloaded the furniture as a smiling young girl held the door for us, and a content mother told us where to set things.

The day began at the Salvation Army Thrift Store, where we were able to pick up several pieces of furniture to help jump-start the family’s new journey. Because we do not carry a lot of furniture at a time in our thrift store, we try to support other organizations by often buying pieces from them. We found several side tables, a coffee table, dressers, and a kitchen table. We then went to The Sleep Zone to pick up two new mattresses, bed frames, and box springs. Mark Matteau and his staff are always very generous with Family Promise.

After loading the furniture, the Family Promise Thrift Store team gathered dishware, sheets, lamps, and utensil needs. Cleaning supplies and various small kitchen appliances were also provided. Supplying essentials such as furniture and household items gives the family fewer things to stress about, and they can enjoy moving into their space and on from the shelter.

Family Promise could not provide these things without our generous community of supporters and donors. It is with immense gratitude that we can provide these needs whenever a family moves on from our shelter.

Even after being in our shelter for a short period, this family stabilized and focused on finding a place for their feet to land. Successes such as this make even the challenging days good at Family Promise. Going from having hardly any control over their lives to now having a level of stability is what Family Promise hopes for every family that comes through our shelter.

Now it is time to welcome a new family into the shelter so they, too, can begin removing obstacles, addressing issues, and improving their lives in a place of their own.
